Curly hair is amazing and diverse. It bends and curls through tight ringlets and natural hair to soft, beachy waves and everything in between. At Hair Co BKLYN, we love curly hair and hair with unique textures and shapes. It is our goal to help clients love their curly hair and treat it well. Many clients are surprised to hear that curly hair should be treated differently than straight hair. And that not all hair products should be used on all types of hair. In fact, you should have a very specific hair regimen based on your curly hair type and texture. This also goes for curly haircuts in Brooklyn, make sure you have a hairstylist who knows how to cut and style curly hair.

Be Gentle with Your Curls – Detangle When Wet. Always!

Cleanse, condition to rehydrate, and use a masque that offers moisture and protein. The secret to detangling is wetter is better. Detangling is easiest when your hair is WET, even before you remove the conditioner or masque. Detangling dry can be difficult and a little rough on your hair, especially if it is tangled or knotted. For these situations, our Brooklyn stylists recommend evenly saturating your hair with water, inside and out. Then gently cleanse your hair with a moisturizing shampoo or co-wash, we love Oribe Moisture and Control Shampoo or Cleansing Conditioner with your conditioner or masque still in the hair then you can gently run your fingers through your hair and working through the tangles and curls, using a comb, or using a detangling brush. Rinse the conditioner or leave it in overnight then begin your styling ritual. The main advice here is to be gentle with your curls.

Never Wash Your Hair Daily

Stop shampooing your hair every day, you are most likely stripping your hair of its natural oils and drying out your curls. Instead, try washing your hair once or twice per week with a shampoo or co-wash. You will quickly notice a difference in texture and bounce to your curls. Although shampoo is not your friend, don’t be afraid to use extra conditioner or a masque as a conditioner if your hair is feeling dry or brittle. Ultimately, find a washing routine that works well for you and your curls.

Find the Right Hair Products

This tip is hair type and texture dependent. It’s important to find the right hair products for your curls and their texture. Even if a product is marketed for curly hair, it might not be best for your hair type. Instead, consult a hairstylist who specializes in curly and natural hair. They will be able to recommend ingredients, products, and brands that will work well with your hair and texture.

Use the Best Tools

Again, you need to find the tools that work with your curls, not against them. In terms of drying your hair, we recommend trying a diffuser, rather than the typical hairdryer. You will find that your curls stay more intact and less frizzy. Additionally, your fingers and hands are some of the best tools around. When trying to tame your curls, sometimes twisting them between your fingers is the best remedy for the perfect look.
