Introduction

How often do you get an opportunity to push past all your defenses and face your fears? For most of our lives, we are scared of challenging ourselves and stepping beyond our comfort zones. Needless to say, whenever we think about a trip or a vacation, we tend to look for a relaxing getaway. However, if you are tired of doing so then the Pangarchulla Trek in Uttarakhand is the ultimate expedition for you. At an altitude of 4575 meters, it is the one of the highest levels of non-technical climbing and meant for people who are looking for some adventure in their daily lives. As you watch the evening sun lend a golden hue to the colossal Himalayan ranges when you reach the summit, the feeling is surreal.

How to Prepare for the Climb?

It is said that the Pangarchulla Summit Expedition prepares you for progress from trekking to mountaineering. The terrain is undulating, filled with snow and gigantic boulders, narrow ridges, steep ascents and long stretches between resting spots. Considerably challenging, this trek requires some amount of technical knowledge and a good fitness level. This is because you will need to set a firm grip on the snow below, navigate your way through the maze of huge rocks, while keeping your stamina intact for uphill climbs and long hours of walking. Include physical activities in your daily routine months prior to the trek and if you want then you can also enroll in any of the short term trekking or mountaineering courses available at various institutes.

Arrival at Dehradun

To reach the capital city of Uttarakhand, Dehradun, one would have to book their flights for the Jolly Grant Airport or arrive at the Dehradun Junction by train. From these places, buses are available to take you to either your lodging facilities or directly to Joshimath, the base camp for the trek. However, it is recommended that you spend at least a night in the city as you will need some time to adjust to the high altitude conditions. Additionally, you will be tired after a long day of traveling especially if you are driving all the way from Delhi which can take up to 5-6 hours. Savor the splendid beauty of the Himalayan landscapes as you make your way to the popular tourist spot.

Dehradun to Joshimath

From the capital city, you will have to drive for a distance of 280 kilometers to reach Joshimath, the gateway to the Badrinath pilgrim site. It can take up to 9 hours to complete this journey and you will be exhausted by the end of the day but the mesmerizing views on the way make up for the hectic trip. The rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi joining together to form River Ganga in Devprayag against a backdrop of the majestic verdant hills, is a sight to behold and capture.

Joshimath to Guling

On day 2, as you head from Joshimath towards Guling Campsite, you will be driving up to Dhak and from this point onwards, your trek commences. Initially, the route is not difficult as you will come across the lush Auli meadows which also serves as a skiing location when covered with snow. Then you will pass the Tulgasi Village which adds a unique charm to the place with its line of wooden houses. Throughout the journey, you will be accompanied by the stunning visuals of the Garhwal ranges and the alpine woodlands in the forefront.

Guling to Khulara

The peaks such as Nanda Devi and Dronagiri are visible as you make your way through the rugged terrain between Guling and Khulara. The actual climb begins from here as the ascent becomes steep and there is a sudden increase in the altitude which you will need to adjust with. Reaching the Khulara Campsite at an altitude of 3389 meters after trekking for 6 kilometers feels like an achievement. Rest well under the starlit sky as you gear up for the ultimate climb to the summit.

Khulara to Pangarchulla Summit

Perched at an altitude of 4575 meters, the journey to the top will test your endurance levels as you will have to climb some of the most steep slopes and trek for the next 12 kilometers without long breaks because you will have to head back to the Khulara Campsite by late evening. This journey is exhausting but once you reach the summit you will realize that you have achieved something significant and the panoramic views of the Garhwal ranges and the valley below is a treat for sore eyes and a reward for sore muscles.

Khulara to Joshimath to Dehradun

On the last two days, head back to Joshimath and Dehradun. You must explore places in and around these checkpoints such as Gurso Bugyal meadows, the Valley of Flowers, the Mindrolling Monastery, the Forest Research Institute  Robber's Cave and so many other places.

Conclusion

You learn so much about yourself when you decide to test your limits and push your boundaries. This experience will surely leave a lasting impression on you and help you discover your potential to deal with a diverse range of circumstances and be a more confident version of yourself.
