Naturalisation is the legal course of action by which a person who is not a citizen of a country may get citizenship or nationality of that country. It might be carried out automatically by legislation, in which the applicant doesn’t have to take any action, it happens automatically, or it could include an application that must be approved by the appropriate authorities to get citizenship.

Eligibility Criteria For Naturalisation As A British Citizen:

  • The applicant should be at least a18 years old
  • The applicant must have been granted the indefinite leave to remain (ILR)
  • The applicant must have acquired a right of permanent residence in the UK

You must fulfil specific statutory requirements regarding your immigration status, period of stay in the UK, future ambitions, expertise in the English language and lifestyle in the UK, and good character to be naturalised as a British citizen. The procedures for obtaining British citizenship by naturalisation differ somewhat depending on whether or not you are married to a British citizen.

If you're not married to a British citizen (or do not intend to depend on your marriage to a British citizen), there are some set of protocols the Home Office must be satisfied with. Enlisted are some of them:

  • You have not been gone from the United Kingdom for more than 450 days in the five years since;
  • You have not been in the UK in violation of immigration regulations at any point during the last five years.
  • You have not been away from the UK for more than 90 days in the 12 months before the date of your application;

  • You are of good character;

  • You intend to live in the UK if your application is accepted.
