Tramadol (trade name Ultram, among others) is an opioid analgesic used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. It is available as tablets, capsules, an oral solution and a dispersible tablet which melts in the mouth. Tramadol was published in 1972 in Germany under the brand name Ultracet by Ultracet GmbH. It was first approved in the United States by the FDA in 1995. In 2005, Tramadol became subject to a mandatory minimum sentencing policy in Florida after it was used in several drug-related deaths.
